Improving Your WordPress Security

With any kind of software there are always new security vulnerabilities. Security is one of the main reasons why software is constantly being updated and upgraded, as new flaws are constantly being found by hackers.

There are several things that you can do to ensure that your WordPress installation is as secure as possible. The main two ways of ensuring your WordPress website is secure are:

One way of ensuring your WordPress installation is secure is by ensuring that your username and password are secure. The majority of hackers know that usually WordPress is setup with a user account called ‘Admin’. Therefore to improve your security you can delete the admin account or simply change the username. Also you should ensure that your password is at least 6-8 characters long and includes numbers or symbols as this will make the password a lot harder to crack. To make it even harder to crack you can use a password that is personal to you and is not part of your website.

The second way is ensuring that all of your themes and plugins are updated on a regular basis, because as I stated at the top of this post, the main reason for developers creating updates to their software is mainly security based.

The best way to check your WordPress website for security issues is to install a plugin to manage your WordPress security. If you want to check the security of your WordPress installation then you may want to try one of these plugins.

There are several plugins that can be used to improve and monitor the security of your WordPress installation. The most commonly used and highly rated security plugins for WordPress include ‘Better WP Security’ and ‘Ultimate Security Checker’. These plugins are both very good at detecting any security issues your WordPress installation may have. However I would suggest that the ‘Better WP Security’ plugin is the easiest to use as with the ‘Ultimate Security Checker’ plugin it only tells you what security issues your WordPress installation has and tells you how to fix them. Whereas with the ‘Better WP Security’ plugin it tells you where the security issues are and also gives you a variety of checkboxes and options to improve your security.
